Studying through the summer
While others are on vacation, 520 students from 92 different countries are poring over textbooks at Blindern. (a famous traditional dormitory at the university of Oslo)
On the steps outside Blindern Dormitory they are communicating in stuttering Norwegian and English with all accents imaginable.
For the 59th consecutive summer students from over the world are gathered to study their way through six weeks of the summer.
“We say: Come to Oslo and see the World!” laughs Einar Vannebo, Director of the International Summer School (ISS),
The summer students can choose from 23 different courses, where everything from the Norwegian Language and Culture to Media and Peace Studies is represented. So the school is no summer holiday.
“I thought I’d have ample time to lie on the banks of those fantastic fjords and relax, but it’s hard work instead”, says Max Handler(26).
He is studying for a doctor’s degree in fishery, and his field of interest is cod fishing in Northern Norway. He is now taking a course in Norwegian so as not to have to do all the research interviews in English.
About 20 percent of the students are from the USA. This is because when the school was founded in 1947 it was originally designed for American students. There are also a lot of Russians at the school, but otherwise the numbers of the students from different countries are distributed evenly. Since its beginning,23 000 students have gone through the Summer School. A lot of instruction is based on field trip and, in the afternoon and on weekends, the students are offered excursions to places ranging from the Munch Museum to Jotunheimen.
According to Stevlana Racanovic from Latvia, a lot of the learning is done through staying and studying together with people from so many various countries.
Kahori Ochi(29), Japan
-Quite her job as a writer of travel guides in order to study. Is taking a course in Western philosophy to find out more about the Western way of thinking and lifestyle.
-Is of the opinion that people have a lot of leisure time in Norway and that the society is not very competitive. People think more independently and dare to voice their opinions.
